Expedition: Blue Planet is a 100 day journey across five continents where Alexandra Cousteau explores various water issues. In this short video clip, Cousteau describes the high levels of unemployment among Cajun fisherman in Louisiana due to a newly discovered "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico. The dead zone is an area of 20,000 square kilometers in which no life exists. This is due to excess levels of nitrogen and phosphorous in the fertilizers of mid-west farms that travel down the Mississippi River and suck the oxygen from the water. This dead zone is causing cajun fisherman to question the continuation of their livelihood as their nets continue to come up empty. Creation Care Council member, Greg Bowman, recommends this resource saying, "As a person who lived for two years in Golden Meadow among shrimpers, and who spends his working life trying to figure out how to reduce the amount of chemical fertilizer applied from the East Coast to the High Plains, this video really strikes a chord. We are all downstream, and we are all upstream of someone else: in time, place and ecological looping." http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/wilderness-resources/videos/blue-legacy-louisiana-downstream-dead-zone
